Before you begin

The questionnaire takes about 5 minutes. Two things will make your results more accurate — worth a moment to gather before you start.

Count and group your windows

Walk around your home and count all windows, then roughly sort them into three sizes.

Small — ∼2×3 ft (∼6 sq ft)
Bathroom, small bedroom, basement

Medium — ∼3×4 ft (∼12 sq ft)
Standard bedroom, kitchen, dining

Large — ∼4×5 ft+ (∼20 sq ft)
Picture windows, patio doors

I've counted my windows and know roughly how they break down

Find your annual energy use

Total consumption for the past 12 months for each fuel you use. Log in to your utility account online or add up paper bills.

→Electricity — total kWh for the year (BC Hydro online → Usage)

→Natural gas — total GJ for the year (FortisBC online account)

→Oil — total litres delivered in the past year (delivery receipts)

Windows, Insulation & Envelope

Single pane

One layer of glass. Very common in homes built before 1980. Often cold to the touch in winter, may frost at the edges, and you can feel a draft nearby on windy days.

Clue: glass feels cold in winter · no gap visible at edge

Double pane — aluminum frame

Two layers of glass with a metal frame. Common in 1970s–1990s renovations. The metal frame conducts cold, so you may still get condensation at the edges even though the glass itself is better insulated.

Clue: thin silver or dark metal frame · installed 1975–2000

Double pane — vinyl frame

Two layers of glass in a white or beige plastic frame. The most common replacement window installed from the 1990s onward. Better thermal performance than aluminum — the frame doesn't conduct cold the same way.

Clue: white or beige frame · chunky plastic · installed post-1990

Double pane — low-e argon

Two layers of glass with a heat-reflective coating and argon gas between the panes. The best performing double-pane option. Usually installed post-2005. Very little condensation, noticeably warmer near the glass in winter.

Clue: small etched "E" mark on corner of glass · barely any condensation · feels warm nearby

Triple pane

Three layers of glass. Noticeably heavy and thick. Mostly found in high-performance new builds post-2010 or in passive house construction. Excellent insulation — the glass and frame feel close to room temperature even in deep winter.

Clue: very thick frame · heavy to open · installed post-2010 · very quiet

Tip: check the original building permit or renovation receipts if you have them

Wall R-Value (if known) Check renovation permits, insulation receipts, or your home inspection report. Common values: R-12 (2×4 original), R-20 (2×6 upgraded), R-28+ (deep retrofit).

Number of Exterior Doors Count all doors leading outside, including garage entry doors. Sliding glass doors count as windows.
